Open-cell and closed-cell foam insulate and seal in one step. Here is how to choose and what to expect.
Spray foam is applied as a liquid that expands and hardens. It seals cracks as it insulates, so it does two jobs at once. Open-cell foam is soft and light, with good sound control. Closed-cell foam is dense and rigid, with a high R-value per inch and strong moisture resistance.
The material is powerful but needs skilled application. Temperature, mixing ratios and thickness all affect the result, and the space must be ventilated and vacated during installation. We use foam where it solves a real problem, such as rim joists, roof decks and metal buildings.
Suited to crawl spaces and rim joists.
Soft, light and vapor-open.
Fewer separate steps.
Especially closed-cell.
Best where its strengths matter.
Quality depends on application.
