Floor and Subfloor Insulation

Insulation under cold floors, over crawl spaces, garages and cantilevers, so the floors above feel warm underfoot.

A cold floor is one of the most noticeable comfort problems in a home. Floors over a vented crawl space, a garage or a cantilevered bump-out lose heat in winter, and the floor surface gets cold even when the room is warm.

We insulate between the joists with batts held in place by supports, with blown-in insulation behind netting or with foam applied to the underside of the subfloor. Each method needs its own details to keep the insulation tight to the floor and protected from moisture.

Contact is key

Floor insulation must touch the underside of the subfloor to work, because a gap lets air circulate behind it. We use supports, netting or spray foam to keep it tight.

Over vented crawl spaces

Floors over a vented crawl space need an air barrier on the underside and careful moisture control. We often pair floor insulation with a vapor barrier on the ground.

Garages and cantilevers

Rooms over a garage and overhanging bump-outs are classic cold spots. Air sealing plus a dense insulation layer solves most of the problem.

Pests and moisture

Floor insulation in a damp crawl space can hold moisture or invite pests. We address the humidity first or choose a material that handles it well.

What is included

We protect the house, seal air leaks, place baffles and fix small problems so the insulation can do its job.

  4. 04

    Install the insulation

Loose-fill, batts, foam or board goes in to the planned depth, with clean edges and clear markers.

  5. 05

    Verify and test

We measure the result, take photos and test air leakage when the scope includes it.

  6. 06

Questions

Floor and Subfloor Insulation FAQ

Why are my floors cold in winter?

Cold air under the floor and gaps in the insulation above it are the usual causes. Air sealing and tight insulation fix most cases.

Should I insulate the floor or the crawl space walls?

It depends on whether the crawl space is vented or closed. We explain both approaches and recommend one for your house.

Does floor insulation attract pests?

It can if the space is damp and open. A closed crawl space or a pest-resistant material reduces the risk.

Can you insulate a floor over a garage?

Yes. We use dense insulation and an air barrier to keep the room above comfortable.

Can you do this without removing the floor?

Yes. We work from below through the crawl space or garage.
