Rim Joist Insulation

The leaky band around the top of your foundation, sealed and insulated so drafts and cold floors stop at the edge.

The rim joist, or band joist, is the board that runs around the top of the foundation and sits below the exterior wall. It has many seams, it touches masonry and it is often completely uninsulated, so it leaks air and heat all around the house.

We seal the rim joist with closed-cell spray foam, or we cut foam board to fit each bay and seal the edges with foam, so air cannot slip through. It is a quick project with a visible effect on drafts, cold floors and the humid air that enters in summer.

A big leak in a small space

The rim joist has dozens of gaps where framing meets the foundation and the sill. Together they can leak as much air as an open window.

Spray foam or cut-and-cobble

Closed-cell spray foam seals and insulates in one step. The cut-and-cobble method uses foam board sealed at the edges, which is a good option when spray foam is not practical.

Why not fiberglass

Batts in the rim joist let air through and can hold moisture against wood. A foam seal does the job without these problems.

Pest and termite inspection

We leave an inspection gap or follow your pest provider guidance where needed, so insulation does not hide a problem.

Questions

Rim Joist Insulation FAQ

Is rim joist insulation worth doing alone?

Yes. It is a fast, high-impact upgrade, especially when floors feel cold or the basement is drafty.

Is spray foam better than foam board here?

Spray foam seals more fully. Foam board is a good alternative where spray foam is not suitable.

Will insulating the rim joist trap moisture?

Foam does not absorb water, but we check for leaks or termites first.

How long does it take?

Most homes take half a day to a day.

Can you insulate a rim joist in a crawl space?

Yes. The method is the same, adapted to the available access.
